Westbury Rangers 'A' v Corsham Centre

Corsham Centre's record run ended

Corsham Centre's 98 match unbeaten league run has been ended, with Westbury Rangers A beating the champions 2-1.

Rangers have taken over at the top of the table after becoming the first team since April 2003 to beat the Centre in a league match.

The Centre had almost a full strength side available for their trip to Westbury, manager Pete Ralph the only noticeable absentee.

Shaun Gardiner's Westbury side were without Ross Parker and Pete Ayton, but for the first time in six attempts Rangers were able to get the better of their opponents.

The statistics show the Centre out-numbered Rangers in efforts at goal but it was in the goals column that really matters that Rangers did the damage and in particular Marc Lanfear who scored both of the goals.

Lanfear struck in the first half to give Rangers the lead on the half-hour mark and when he made it 2-0 15 minutes from time he woke up the sleeping giants who in spite of having the majority of the second half could not find a way past Rangers young goalkeeper Nathan Taylor who produced one memorable save to deny Tim Jefferies.

Rangers had to withstand a late onslaught from the Centre as they looked to get back in the game and had it not been for the determination of the Rangers defence, led by Dave and Tom Whyte and Mark Young, they might have done so before Ross Lye struck in the 85th minute.

The Centre threw everything at Rangers in the hope of claiming a draw but Rangers held out for a famous victory which could now open up the race for this season's Premier Division title.
